Negotiating on the Go: My GulFood Experience ????️ Last year at #GulFood, some of my most memorable negotiations didn’t happen at our booth—they took place in the unlikeliest of places: a hotel lobby, after a 2km swim session and breakfast, coffee in hand, waiting for an Uber taxi. ???? While en route to the exhibition, I found myself immersed in impromptu meetings that led to crucial outreach deals. In these moments, I applied key principles from “Never Split the Difference” by Chris Voss: 1. Tactical Empathy in Action: Understanding that the decision-makers across the table are often just as rushed as you are. By recognizing their challenges and acknowledging them upfront, I could shift the tone from a cold transaction to a collaborative conversation. A simple, “I know we’re both pressed for time today…” made all the difference. 2. Mirroring the Moment: Instead of sticking to a rigid pitch, I mirrored the relaxed, yet urgent atmosphere of our surroundings. Conversations flowed naturally—what began with casual chat about the city turned into a discussion on how our products could solve real challenges. 3. Labeling the Opportunity: Instead of diving straight into price or logistics, I labeled the situation: “This feels like an opportunity we shouldn’t miss…”—a subtle nudge that turned a casual chat into an actionable agreement. From the pool to breakfast, and the hotel lobby to the exhibition booth, negotiations happen everywhere—when you’re prepared to listen, adapt, and meet people where they are. These moments taught me that deals are often made in the in-between spaces, where human connection drives the conversation forward. And sometimes, all it takes is a swim, a cup of coffee, and a few well-chosen words.
